2005

Hosted our first annual Vermont-to-Montreal Bike Tour for 30 political, business and community leaders in an effort to promote bicycle tourism and trail development in the region.

 

Established Bike Recycle Vermont – an all volunteer effort to refurbish bikes and provide them at no cost to immigrants and refugees in the greater Burlington area.

  Won a South Hero ballot item that secured $120,000 for improving the safety of South Street for bicyclists and pedestrians
2004

Achieved the opening of the Burlington / Colchester Trail Bridge.  Local Motion led a partnership that completed the local financial match for the keystone project.  

 

Launched “Way To Go!”  – a campaign to encourage area commuters to try healthy and earth-friendly ways of getting to work.  Partners include CCMPO, Lake Champlain Committee, CCTA, Local Motion and the 10% Challenge.  www.WayToGoVT.org

 

Won a $2.6M bond vote in Williston for recreation paths and sidewalks.  Local Motion assisted Williston Rec Path Committee in educating voters.

2003 Initiated Cycle the City guided tours – three hour cycling tours led by local volunteer historians
 

Concluded 4 years of Winooski River Bike Ferry operation with more than 20,000 annual boardings and saw construction commence on the trail bridge.              

 

Launched Valet Bike Parking – a guarded bike parking service at eight major festivals and events

2002

Established a reserve fund to ensure the long-term financial health of the organization

 

Began serving as a bicycle tourism clearinghouse for Lake Champlain Bikeways and responding to 1,500 annual email and phone requests

2001

Opened the Trailside Center on the Island Line trail providing 7,000 trail users each year with a rest stop, beverages, maps, information, t-shirts, rentals and more

 

Collaboratively raised $140,000 to conserve Mayes Landing -- a key parcel of trailside land on the Winooski River – with the City of Burlington, Winooski Valley Park District, Lake Champlain Land Trust and Trust for Public Land.

 

Secured funds for the rehabilitation of the Allen Point Access Area in South Hero – providing public access to the spectacular 3-mile marble causeway.

  Hosted demonstration ferry service across the next gap in the trail (between Colchester and South Hero) and secured a $200,000 earmark with the leadership of Congressman Sanders for permanent ferry service at this location.
2000

Christened the Winooski River Bike Ferry on its first regularly scheduled service

 

Inaugurated Cycle the City – a 10-mile historic bike loop of Burlington – with a group ride led by the Mayors of Burlington, VT, Plattsburgh, NY, and St. Jean Sur Richelieu, QC.

1999

Incorporated Local Motion as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization
